Many houses were built with basements to provide extra storage space for the homeowners. These rooms were deliberately constructed below ground level because people needed a cool, dry place to store grains, paper products, textile materials, and other supplies. Also, housewives would store their jars of preserved fruits and vegetables in the basement.
Later, when a grown son would need his separate space, not just a bedroom, then the basement turns into a home for a bachelor. Of course, the basement flooring and walls as well as the ceiling must be renovated to make the area hospitable to a human being. In winter, it must be warm and comfortable. In summer, it must be cool.
