Ephedra comes from an evergreen plant called Ma Huang, which is indigenous to China, India and some parts of Southeast Asia. The Chinese used a plant preparation of ephedra for more than 5,000 years to treat asthma and allergies. When taken in small doses, ephedra seems generally safe for medicinal use. However, recent developments in weight loss products showed ephedra diet pills as the fastest solution to fat and weight problems.
The amount of ephedra in these diet pills exceed the recommended dosage. Consequently, the FDA banned these ephedra diet pills because of their negative side effects, which in some cases led to death. Mild side effects include dizziness, nervousness, headaches, vomiting, insomnia, and irritability.
