Playing With Yo-Yos Bolster Creativity and Mental Alertness

The traditional toys and children's games have already lost their appeal to the latest generations of kids who have grown up playing video games on Wii or Xbox. They also learned to depend on computers and mobile devices, such as smartphones, laptops and electronic tablets, when communicating with friends or family and when looking for easy answers to difficult questions raised during their classroom discussions. In effect, the new generation of kids currently fail at showing some resourcefulness and creativity in their studies. It seems the loss of traditional toys and games, like hopscotch and playing with yo yos , has a profound effect on our children's intellectual, emotional and social development. Yo yos, in particular, may have a significant effect on a child's cognitive development according to Datuk Dr. Mat Saat Baki, a clinical psychologist based in Kuala Lumpur. He further explained that playing the yo yo uses both the left and right sides of the brain, specifi

My Memories of Hiking

I may not look like it now, but I used to love hiking and spending my leisure time outdoors. In high school, me and my friends used to go out and visit the provinces. We'd hike through mountain trails or climb steep trails up a hillside to reach another friend's house during fiestas. Although we didn't need equipment from an Outdoor Store , we still need to be dressed and in shape for the task. We often wear rubber shoes instead of rubber slippers. Slippers might have been easier to clean and more comfortable to wear than rubber shoes, but they often slipped and get torn when used in the mud. Muddy jeans were also better fashion statements than a muddy skirt or a pair of shorts that left one's legs vulnerable to scratches and scrapes as well as mosquito bites.

The Origins of the Ukulele

For a very long time, the ukulele have been strongly associated with Hawaiian music and culture. What most people may not know yet is that this small-sized musical instrument was originally the favored stringed instrument of the Portuguese sailors in the late 19th century. The ukulele's Portuguese ancestor was called the  braguinha . Another Portuguese musical instrument, the  cavaquinho , also looks similar to both the braguinha and the ukulele. However, the current design of the ukulele is believed to be a hybrid between the original Portuguese instruments and the modern guitar. It was during one of their trips to an archipelago in the Pacific that the Portuguese became the instrument in establishing this four-stringed guitar as a cultural and musical icon in Hawaii. The Hawaiian natives were very impressed with the uke's sound and the level of skill that the sailors played the strings. Thereafter, they re-christened the musical instrument as "ukulele," which mean

Common Sense Ideas for Healthy Beautiful Skin

It's hard to watch television these days without seeing commercials for expensive beauty products that promise to deliver eternal youth and beauty in a jar. Their job is to convince you to buy these expensive products so that you too can remain beautiful for many years to come. Some products really can improve the condition and overall health of your skin but they don't all charge an arm and a leg to do it. At the same time, if you want your skin to look good, you need to practice some common sense. You'll be surprised by how well a few common sense fixes can enhance your skin's beauty. Don't overlook the importance of overnight treatments. You can make your own night-time skin cream using natural ingredients or you can buy one from the store. This is the reason you often wake

The Integrated Approach to Dual Diagnosis Treatment

Individuals suffering from depression are likely to adopt an addiction. It may be alcoholism where they're drowning their sorrows in a bottle, nicotine addiction as they hoped to puff away their sadness and misery in a cloud of smoke, or drug abuse because they want to kill their emotional pain through abusing a variety of drugs, illegal or otherwise. Some people, though, turn to abusing their body by putting their health at risk with their tendency towards overeating when they're feeling down in the dumps or with their bad habit of overloading their system with sugar to "feel better." Sadly, continued dependence on these bad habits or vices will only keep them imprisoned within a state of deep depression. As a result, they often see little chance of getting out of the Dark Hole their mind is currently buried deep. This feeling of hopelessness further pushes them into a deeper depression. It's actually a cycle that only a wake-up call from a caring friend, a c

Get A Flawless Tan From Airbrushing With Tanning Sprays

Honestly, I already got a tan. However, the areas of my body that are less exposed have lighter skin than my arms, legs, shoulders, neck and face. It would be wise for me to have these light areas tanned by safe means. Definitely, sun bathing is out of the list of tanning methods I'll consider. Yet, I'm wary of using tanning methods that I don't have control over the shade of tan I wanted to achieve. I want to match the shade of my tanned arms and legs with the tan I want on my chest, stomach and upper thighs. I know the best option is to have an expert at the salon or spa give my skin a flawless tan, but salon tanning is expensive for my budget. I also tried tanning creams before, but they didn't give me a smooth and even tan. In fact, my skin looked splotchy. Right now, I'm looking at using  tanning sprays  as safer and quicker alternatives to indoor tanning, tanning lotions, or sun bathing. What's more, I can use an airbrush to spray a fine mist of th

The Importance of Using an Anti Aging Night Cream

As much as we try to find the fountain of youth, our body's health and appearance will decline. The downhill trend goes much faster when go past the age of 30. We need a healthy lifestyle to slow the rate of the whole aging process. To be able to add to what is at our disposal, we need to take a good look at our life style. Titanium Jewelry is Hypoallergenic! Best for my skin type.

Traditionally, rings either worn as fashionable jewelry or as wedding bands were made with either gold or silver. Yet, people today rarely follow tradition and very much prefer wearing jewelry made from durable materials aside from gold or silver. Examples of these modern types of jewelry include the titanium rings and tungsten rings. Although they have less market value compared to gold or silver, titanium and tungsten are very durable metal elements. Aside from durability, titanium rings in particular have hypoallergenic properties that won't cause your sensitive skin to break out from an allergic reaction. With gold or silver, some people develop a rash, or worse, an eczema problem that is difficult to get rid of completely. If you have sensitive skin and easily develop an allergy to gold or silver, then wearing titanium rings, bracelets and necklaces are your best choice. Moreover, titanium does not tarnish or rust for a long, long time. Any jewelry made from titanium will s

Name Tags I Used To Make

I remember creating simple name tags out of a cut-up squares of white cartolina. I'd stick a medium-sized safety pin at the top and write the first name of the person in big letters using a Pentel pen with a fat tip. With my own name tag, I remember drawing cute little flowers around my name. However, the days of using plain cartolina or cardboard to make name tags are long gone. Today, name tags are made with plastic-laminated ID cards that may be digitally printed with colored logos and background designs. A magnetic strip or a bar code may also be added to the name tags. To wear them, people don't need to attach a safety pin. Each card already comes with a plastic clip or a strip of adhesive at the back. Others would attach a cord or a lanyard to a punched hole at the top, and then, they'd wear their name tags like a necklace.

What is a Yoga Block?

Yoga mostly consists of limbering exercises, balanced postures, breathing exercises, and meditation. However, yoga, like other forms of physical fitness training, also uses props or tools, such as a yoga block , to make bending, stretching and contorting less difficult to maintain in a posture that requires stillness of body, calmness of mind, and serenity of the spirit. Yoga blocks vary in size. Some blocks are so small they're called bricks. They have the same measurements as bricks. They often come in the four by six by nine size. They're placed under wrists or ankles, and they provide stability to your yoga poses. A yoga block or brick is usually made from a softly textured, but semi-firm material, such as cork or foam . It's solid enough to serve as good support for your back or to carry your weight. Aside from providing stability and support, a yoga block also helps reduce the distance between the body and the floor. It also helps you modify your yoga poses with b
