Identifying Marks on Sterling Silver Bars and Coins

Unlike gold, which is measured by karats in smaller numbers like 18 or 24, the measurement of silver whether they're coins or silver bars from Golden Eagle is in figures of 900 and above. In Egypt, the most common grade of silver starts at 900 sterling. In England, most of the silver is marked at 925 sterling. What's more, silver bars are often branded with different types of marks (symbols or images) to identify their point of origin and their makers. The Britannia or lion passant guardiant mark indicates that the bars or coins were of high-quality sterling silver from Britain. For the maker's mark, the silver bar or coin is usually stamped with the first letters of the maker's first name and surname inside a circle, square or triangle.
